Un comodín llamado terciopelo / A joker called velvet

Aunque hace todavía demasiado calor para pensar en llevar cualquier tipo de chaqueta o bota, no he podido evitar ir comprando algunas cosillas para la nueva temporada. Como muestra de ello, acabo de adquirir esta maravillosa americana de terciopelo en Massimo Dutti. Sencillamente me enamoré de su precioso color verde botella nada más verla... Ya os he enseñado alguna vez varios outfits con una americana color burdeos también de terciopelo. Ha sido uno de mis básicos más básicos durante mucho tiempo, pero este año empezó a lucir algo deteriorada, así que no se me ocurre mejor sustituto.
Although it is still too hot to think about wearing any kind of jackets or boots, I could not avoid to buy some new stuff for the new season. As an example, I have just got this amazing green velvet blazer from Massimo Dutti. I  just  fell in love with its gorgeous bottle green color from the very first time I saw it... I have already showed you some outfits with a bourdeaux blazer made of velvet too. It has been one of my most basic basics for a long time ago, but it started to look a little damaged this last year, so I cannot imagine a better substitute.

Lo que me encanta del terciopelo es que puede quedar bien tanto con outfits formales como con otros más casual. Si lo combinas con encajes y sedas, consigues un efecto decadente y bohemio, pero si eres partidaria de looks algo más pulidos puede funcionar también, combinándolo con piezas de inspiración masculina o directamente en un total look. Tan solo trata de evitar el "efecto circo", que llega cuando mezclas terciopelo con prendas estructuradas y/o de colores muy brillantes.
What I love about velvet is that it can work either for formal outfits or for more casual ones. If you combine it with lace and silk, you get a decadent and boho effect, but if you prefer to wear more polished outfits it can work too, combining it with male-inspired pieces or directly in a total look. Just try to avoid the "circus effect", which comes when adding velvet plus structured and/or brightly coloured clothes.

¿Y respecto a los colores? Personalmente prefiero los más oscuros, en negro, verde botella, marrón, burdeos... Las versiones más claras pueden funcionar también, pero normalmente los reflejos tan bonitos que produce el terciopelo son mucho más impactantes con colores oscuros, especialmente en los total look (echad un vistazo a la temporada O/I 2014 de Ralph Lauren, ya que sus propuestas, como el traje rojo que os sugiero, son auténticas maravillas).

What about the colors? Personally, I prefer the darkest ones, like black, bottle green, brown, burgundy... The lightest versions can work too, but usually the beautiful reflections that the velvet produces are more shocking with dark colors, specially in total looks (take a look to the Ralph Lauren's F/W 2012 season, since his proposals, like the the red suit I suggest you, are authentic marvels).

 

Winter outfits

Por fin ha llegado una nevada de verdad a Trondheim. Ha estado nevando durante más de 3 horas seguidas, y ahora todo aparece cubierto por un precioso manto de color blanco. Me encanta la nieve, pero quizás sea porque no estoy acostumbrada a ella, y mi armario tampoco lo está. Aquí he empezado a llevar abrigos de plumas, botas y demás parafernalia invernal. Al principio me sentía extraña llevando esas cosas, en España no hace tanto frío así que puedo permitirme elegir entre otras opciones que me sientan bastante mejor. Pero aquí en Noruega no me queda otra que ser más práctica. Esa es la razón por la que he estado visitando mis blogs favoritos y seleccionando algunas fotos de los outfits más invernales que he visto, todos ellos tan elegantes como calentitos.
Finally the first real snow came to Trondheim. It has been snowing for more than 3 hours, and now everything is covered by a beautiful white blanket. I love snow, but that is maybe beacuse I am not used to it, and my closet is not either. Here I have started to use feather filled coats, boots and all that winter staff. At first I felt strange with that on me, Spain is not so cold so I can choose some other options that fit me quite better. But here in Norway I must be more practical. This is the reason why I have been visiting my favourite blogs and collecting some pictures of winter outfits, all of them as elegant as warm.

Velkommen til Trondheim

Sé que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que escribí el último post. Una de las principales razones de mi ausencia es que me he mudado a una encantadora ciudad de Noruega llamada Trondheim. Obtuve una beca Erasmus, y gracias a ella voy a vivir aquí como estudiante de intercambio durante diez meses. Llegué en agosto y... Bueno, digamos que no sabría deciros si estos dos meses se me han hecho cortos o no. Estoy muy ocupada aquí, pero no me importa porque lo estoy pasando increíblemente bien. Solo hay una cosa de la que estoy totalmente segura, y es que está siendo una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida.
I know it has been such a long time since the last post. One of the main reasons why I have been absent is that I have moved to a lovely city in Norway called Trondheim. I got an Erasmus internship, so I am going to live here as an exchange student for ten months. I arrived on August and... Well, I do not know if these two months have passed quite quickly or not. I am so bussy here, but I do not care because I am having such a great time. The only thing I am absolutely sure about is that this is being one of the best experiences of my life.

Trondheim es una ciudad bastante pequeña y encantadora  localizada en el centro de Noruega. Posee una bellísima catedral gótica llamada Nidaros, aunque quizás la parte más famosa sean los antiguos almacenes de madera que flanquean ambas orillas del río Nidelva. La Universidad Noruega de Ciencia y Tecnología (NTNU), donde estoy estudiando, es también uno de los elementos más llamativos de la localidad. El edificio principal, localizado en un alto detrás de la catedral, parece un antiguo castillo y te hace sentir como un auténtico Harry Potter (de hecho todo el mundo se refiere a él como 'Hogwarts').
Trondheim is a quite small and cute city located in the centre of Norway. It has a beautiful gothic cathedral called Nidaros, but maybe the most famous part of it are the old wood storehouses flanking both sides of the river Nidelva. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where I am studying, is also one of the showiest elements of the town. The main building, just on the back side of the cathedral, looks like an old castle and makes you feel like an auhtentic Harry Potter (actually everybody refers to it as 'Hogwarts').

Como podréis imaginar, este es un lugar un tanto frío. Es fácil levantarse una mañana de invierno y ver que fuera hay unos -20ºC. Obviamente, ahora no hace tantísimo frío (solo unos 0ºC, todo un lujo aquí), pero ya hemos podido ver caer la primera nevada de la temporada. Poco antes de venir aquí tuve que adaptar mi armario a tan gélidas temperaturas. Me compré el plumas más caliente que encontré en El Corte Inglés (que por cierto me queda bastante mejor de lo que esperaba, gracias a la estola de piel que lleva incorporada y que le da un toque realmente elegante). Aparte, mi armario está hasta arriba de pantalones de lana, jerséis, medias, botas (que nunca me han gustado, pero bueno, las circunstancias imperan), bufandas y demás. Es todo un reto conservar la elegancia con tanta capa encima, razón por la cual busqué algo de inspiración para crear outfits medianamente decentes para estos días tan fríos. Para evitar hacer un post interminable, publicaré otro en los próximas días con algunas de esas imágenes e ideas. De momento, os dejo un simple conjunto de inspiración masculina. Adoro este tipo de outfits porque son cómodos a la par que elegantes y calientes. Para darle un toque final un poco especial, decidí añadir mi abrigo negro de Hakei y esta preciosa estola de piel vintage de la tienda Lotta vintage y que fue el regalo de mi pasado cumpleaños.
P.D.: Perdón por la pobre calidad de las fotos del conjunto. Mi habitación en noruega es tan diminuta que el único sitio donde puedo colocarlos es la cama.

As you can imagine, this is a quite cold place. It is easy to wake up on a winter morning and see that it is about -20ºC outside. Obviously, now it is not so freezing (just about 0ºC, a great luxury here), but we have already seen the first snow of the season. I have had to adapt my closet to such low temperatures. I bought an incredibly warm feather filled coat in El Corte Inglés (which fits me better than expected, thanks to the included fur stole that gives it a really elegant touch). Keeping that apart, my closet is full of wool pants, sweaters, tights, boots (I have never liked them, but circumstances force me), scarves and so on. It is challenging to keep elegance with so many layers on, and that is the reason why I have been looking for some inspiration for these cold days. Just to not make an unending post, I will do another one with some of those pictures and ideas during the following days. For now, I show you a simple male-inspired look. I love this kind of outfits because they are comfortable but also warm and elegant. In order to give a special final touch to it, I decided to add my Hakei's black coat and this beautiful vintage fur scarf from Lotta Vintage, my last birthday's present!

Me gusta la primavera, pero también me saca de quicio porque nunca sé qué ponerme. Supongo que me entendéis cuando os hablo de ese momento en que contemplas tu armario y piensas "esto da mucho calor" o "con estoy me voy a helar". En estos casos, las americanas son mi prenda favorita a la hora de adaptar un outfit a cambios de temperatura tan extremos. Compré esta de terciopelo hace ya algunos años y acabó siendo una de las mejores adquisiciones de mi vida. La llevo tanto en fiestas como en mi día a día. Aun a riesgo de parecer un experimento de oxidación, finalmente me decidí a combinarlo con este precioso vestido en tonos tierra heredado de mi madre.

I like Spring, but it drives me crazy because I never know what to wear. I supose you understand me when you look at your closet and think "that's too warm" or "I'll be freezing with this". Blazers are my favourite pieces when I have to adapt an outfit for such a dramatic temperature change. I bought this velvet one some years ago and it was one of my best purchases ever. I wear it at parties as well as during my day-to-day. Even at the risk of looking like an oxidation experiment, I finally decided to combine it with this beautiful, earth tone dress that I inherited from my mother.

Some excentric key pieces.

Hace algunas semanas fui a la Feria de Moda Vintage de Madrid. Me sentí abrumada por la cantidad de piezas increíbles que pude contemplar: vestidos de fiesta de los años 20 y 60, tocados hechos a mano, pantalones de los 70 perfectamente cortados... La tentación era demasiado grande, pero iba decidida a comprar algo que fuese único pero también práctico, algo que pudiese ponerme no solo en contadas ocasiones especiales. Finalmente, encontré estos increíbles pantalones de Escada de los 80. Llevan incorporado un cinturón de lentejuelas con pequeños flecos de cuentas que tiemblan muchísimo cada vez que muevo las caderas (son como una especie de versión actualizada de los trajes para la danza del vientre).

 Pensé que podrían crear un contraste muy bueno con esta blusa estilo vintage de Mango y mi nuevo kimono de Zara. Estoy feliz de que los kimonos se hayan puesto tan de moda esta temporada. Siempre me han gustado y me parece que combinan estupendamente con cualquier outfit fiestero.

Some weeks ago I went to the Vintage Fashion Fair of Madrid. I was overwhelmed by so many amazing pieces. I saw gorgeous 20s and 60s party dresses, handmade headdresses, perfectly cut 70s pants... The temptation was too big for me to resist, but I'd made up my mind to buy something unique but also useful that I could wear not just for special ocassions. Finally, I found this awesome Escada 80s pants. They have like a paillettes hip scarf with beaded fringes that shake so much when I move (it's a kind of a new version of belly dance costumes).

I thought they would make a great constrast with this vintage inspired blouse and my new kimono from Zara. I'm so glad to see kimonos are so in fashion this season. I've always loved them and they combine so well with party outfits.

Normalmente os enseño outfits que llevo en mi día a día, pero lo cierto es que cuando entro en una tienda me fijo mucho más en las ropas llamativas y glamurosas que las que tienen un estilo un poco más casual, por lo que he decidido preparar algo un poco más especial para hoy. Este outfit me recuerda a una fiesta chic pero a la vez relajada, ya que combina piezas lujosas, como el collar de perlas y la blusa plateada, con unos pantalones anchos nude más sencillos. De todos modos, este conjunto es tan bonito como inútil para las temperaturas gélidas de estos días, así que me tocará esperarme a que llegue la temporada primavera/verano para llevarlo.

I usually show you day-to-day outfits, but when I come into a shop glamourus and ornate clothes catch my atention much more than casual ones, so I decided to look for something special for tonight. This outfit reminds me a chic but also relaxed party, because it combines fancy pieces, like the pearl necklace and the silver top, with a pair of simpler, over-sized nude pants. Anyway, this clothes are as gorgeous as unuseful in single digit temperatures, so I'll have to wait until Spring/Summer to wear them.

Es una pena comprar un vestido vintage precioso y tener que dejarlo criando polvo en el armario por no saber cómo llevarlo. Por eso quiero compartir con vosotras algunas ideas que he ido aprendiendo los últimos años para  llevar la ropa vintage (a veces casi decimonónica) de un modo personal y actual, evitando el efecto "disfraz de época".
It's a shame to buy a gorgeous vintage dress and leave it in the closet for good just because we don't know how to style it. That's why I want to share some tips that I've learned in the last years, that maybe will help you to wear vintage in an original but also trendy way, avoiding the "period dress effect".

• Evita el total look: vestidos de los años 40 con ondas al agua y labios rojos, flecos y pedrería de los años 20 con turbantes, moños tirantes y guantes blancos junto a pomposos vestidos cincuenteros... Salvo en contadas ocasiones especiales, estas ideas son demasiado temáticas. Ante la duda, las joyas modernas, blazers y el pelo suelto con unas ondas naturales suelen funcionar muy bien con casi cualquier look.

• Avoid a total-look: 40's dresses with finger waves and red lips,  flapper fringe 20's outfits with a turban, very full 50's skirts with a tight bun and a pair of long gloves... Excepting some special occasions, those ideas are too costume-y. If you feel doubtful, contemporary jewels, natural wavy hair and blazers usually go with everything.

• Los vestidos extra-largos de encaje es mejor no aderezarlos demasiado, pues son prendas que llaman mucho la atención de por sí. Sandalias y bolsos bandolera dan un toque hippie muy agradable a estos vestidos. Si prefieres un look más sofisticado, una blazer, tacones y labios rojos son más que suficientes.

Si eres rubia, un vestido negro de encaje hará un contraste magnífico.
If you're blonde, a black lace long dress will make an amazing contrast on you.

•  Long lace dresses work better with minimal accesories, because they draw so much attention by themselves. Sandals and long handle bags give a nice hippie touch. If you want a more sophisticated look, a blazer, heels and red lips are more than enough.

• Los vestidos más sencillos se pueden llevar en su versión más natural, como hace Olivia Palermo, o con collares, fulares y el pelo suelto largo emulando al estilo bohemio de las gemelas Olsen.

• More simple dresses work in their most natural version, as Olivia Palermo wears them. You can also combine them with necklaces and natural wavy hair emulating Olsen twin's boho style.

Finalmente, quería mostraros también algunos outfits propios. El primer vestido fue un regalo de cumpleaños que en su momento me encantó, pero que apenas me pongo porque no combina con casi nada. Se me ocurrió probar con unas medias de encaje para darle un toque un poco más sexy y divertido. Además, tengo que llevarlo con tacones sí o sí, porque el largo midi no favorece nada con zapato plano.

 Finally, I have some own outfits to show you.  The first dress is a birthday present that I love but don't wear really often because it goes with almost nothing. I thought to pair it with these beautiful lace tights because they give a sexy touch to a formal look. I have to wear it with heels yes or yes because the midi lenght makes my legs much shorter.

Ésta es una de mis piezas más valoradas y que ya os he enseñado alguna vez, un precioso camisón vintage de L'Arca de L'Avia. Lo uso como vestido, combinado con una blazer muy básica marrón para el día a día. Pero como más me gusta es para un look de noche, con mi queridísima levita de encaje marroquí y este precioso bolsito de piel de cocodrilo de Lotta Vintage.

 These is one my favourite pieces, a beautiful vintage nightdress from L'Arca de L'Avia that makes me feel delicate and elegant. I combine it with heel sandals and basic camel blazer for day-to-day, but I prefer to wear it at night with my dear Moroccan lace levita and this little vintage bag.

 

Y ahora sí que me despido con un adelanto del próximo post, nada que ver con éste en el que este vestido será uno de los protagonistas.
