60s have been so in fashion during the last seasons, and 70s come very trendy too. However, this blog does not follow only trends but also fashion by itself, and today I prefer to pay more attention to a previous decade: 50s, which were maybe the latest golden period of fashion, with an incredible variety of patterns and lines that would be copied again and again throw later seasons.

The american fashion magazine McCall's, which enjoyed a great popularity through much of the 20th century, reached its highest peaks of readership during latest 50s and early 60s, becoming a trustworthy witness of this marvelous fashion period. Because of this, I would like to share with you some of the sewing patterns and fashion sketches that were published by this magazine, feeding the need of 50s' women of being perfect all the day.

Besides the classic Dior's silhouette, characterized by midi length, full-skirt and small waist; some other lines, like slender pencil skirts or short gowns as the first cocktail dresses, were worn too. Fitted jackets decorated with peplums, stiletto heels, pearls, gloves and hats were also very characteristic from this period, where the fashion was regulated by three C's - code, conformity and consumerism.

Today I would like to share with you some vintage Chanel fashion sketches through the 50s and 60s that the excelent-quality vintage shop, Adored Vintage, published in its blog some months ago.Even if we admit that nowadays these outfits could be associated with an elegant but eld woman, nobody can deny the classical savoir faire that they emanate.
Even though I do not feel specially enthusiastic about the Lagerfeld's latest collections, which try to reinvent again and again the iconic keys of Chanel (pearls and tweed, who could doubt it), I would always trust these suits, since they were created by Coco for women who wanted a look practical and stylish at the same time.

El Capitán Molyneux / Captain Molyneux

Edward Molyneux (1891-1974)

Princess Marina of Denmark and Greece, Dutchess of Kent, wearing her wedding dress designed by Edward Molyneux (1934).

Once upon a time a girl enamoured of 20s fashion met a man called Edward Molyneux. Well, 'to meet' is maybe too much; there was nothing she would like more when she realized that all the vintage dresses that made her dream, transporting her to a world of velvets, paillettes and feathers, were signed by that magnificient British designer. She felt so besotted by the creations of that genious that she decided to investigate about her life, finding out his ambitions as a painter, which became frustrated ("thank God", she said to herself, even knowing that this thought was selfish) when lady Duff Gordon, a prestigious Bélle Époque modiste better known as Lucille, noticed his talent and hired him to work at her fashion atelier.
Captain Molyneux (as he was known during his glorious period) learned fast the clothes' art, creating the wedding dress of Dutchess of Kent, among other celebrities' attires, such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich or Vivien Leigh.
It was said about his creations that they were "refined at the edge of outrageous" and that "he was the designer to whom a fashionable woman would turn if she wanted to be absolutely right without being utterly predictable". Our young lady totally agreed with these opinions, after enjoying herself with the vision of his brilliant creations that had survived over the years, delicate and full of personality at the same time.
Regreting that she hadn't been born 70 years before to know the production of this master of fashion in all its splendour, she decided to pay the only tribute that she could afford now in the XXI century: to use her blog to make known her careful selection of the gorgeous clothes signed by Captain Molyneux, hoping the readers will enjoy reading about his life as much as she did writing about it.

Las mariposas de Gaultier / The butterflies of Gaultier

When I saw the Spring's collection by Jean Paul Gaultier, a delightful world built around that mysterious creature called butterfly, I tried to define haute couture, and I could hardly found the words to explain what it means to me. It is the fashion's queen, hours of work that become clothes into authentic masterpieces. When you stare at those magnificient models with their feline walking, you are not thinking about wearing those pieces of art. Even if you can afford them, when would you find the perfect occasion for them? Then, what is the sense of haute couture, if you can never wear those wonderful outfits? Art is the only argument that support these precious handmade creations, as beautiful as useless.

Algo de inspiración para el año nuevo / Some inspiration for the new year

After some weeks of absence (it's just Christmas, we know), I have been wondering about which kind of post would be the best choice to welcome this new year. A compilation of photos, which sum up this blog's spirit, seems to be a proper introduction to a year full of fashion, vintage, photography and aesthetic, pure aesthetic. I hope you enjoy reading about this astonishing and inspiring world as much as I do writing it.
